They cannot Believe
Written by traveler
For some time now I have been wondering about the total lack of belief that can be found in our modern societies, this is belief in almost anything. The demands for proof with the bar set so high it can’t even be considered a legitimate question any more. People cannot even believe what they see with their own eyes or hear with their own ears. It is as if they have entered into a form of forced reality that they physically cannot break free from.
While thinking about this, this was the piece of scripture that was brought to mind so I looked it up. The verses of interest are the last two.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Now one thing that becomes obvious is that everybody seems to believe in everything only once it is too late. They believe that they are being sold out by their political leadership only after they end up in the concentration camps, They believe in UFO’s only after they have been abducted. They believe in demons only after they have been possessed by them. They believe in Jesus only after they end up in hell. It is as if the mind has been blocked and no matter who is telling them what they seem to choose not to believe as an act of their own will. And if you think about it this trait goes back centuries. The earth is round, Oh no it is not its flat, No it’s round I tell you. Blasphemer, burn him!
In the passage above you can see Jesus pointing out this same trait. The rich man is asking if he can go back and warn his brothers so they do not end up in the same fate. Now you would think that if you saw a dead relation come back and warn you about hell you would pay attention but Abraham is quite correct in that it will not work, The brothers would just rationalize it away and believe their own lies because they want to. An interesting trait is pointed out, if a person is going to believe they will believe right from the start, be it a long dead prophet like Moses or an eye witness etc. But if a person does not believe a report nothing new is going to change their minds until they are actually sitting in their misery and its too late for them to do anything to get out of their situation.
